It has rained a lot since since Tetris appeared from the programmer’s hand Alexey Pajitnov for the E60 prototype platform in 1984. With more than 30 years behind him the game has become ever since one of the icons of digital entertainment, especially after his arrival at Nintendo Gameboy in 1989 and his subsequent landing on mobile screens, where it soon surpassed 100 million downloads.
Electronics Arts, which currently owns the franchise, has just announced that it is withdrawing support this year for ‘Tetris‘ and ‘Tetris Blitz‘ the official mobile versions of the classic puzzle game that we previously had in the app stores of the two platforms, iOS and Android.
Goodbye Tetris on April 21st 2020
According to Android Police and MacRumors, the two official Tetris applications disappears from Android and iOS next April 21. From that date, you won’t be able to run it even after you’ve downloaded it to your device.
As a matter of fact ‘Tetris Blitz’ has already disappeared from Google Play and it is not possible to download it, while in the case of ‘Tetris’, now called ‘Tetris 2011’, the latest update contains the following message:
IT WAS AN ADVENTURE, BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT’S TIME TO SAY GOODBYE. AS OF APRIL 21, 2020, EA’S TETRIS® APPLICATION WILL BE WITHDRAWN AND CAN NO LONGER BE PLAYED.
YOU CAN CONTINUE TO ENJOY THE GAME AND USE ALL EXISTING ITEMS UNTIL APRIL 21, 2020.
WE HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS GAME AND WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH
The two applications are still available for download in the App Store, but the last update of both is accompanied by the same goodbye message. This means that we can continue playing them until that day, but from that date not only does the support end, they are removed and disappear.
This decision was made after The Tetris Company and N3twork reached a conclusion last June, an agreement to throw a new mobile game called “Tetris Royale”, whose main attraction will be a 100-player Battle Royale mode “Tetris 99” Nintendo Switch, however, also received “customization options such as power-ups and improvements that can be used in battles.”
