Surely you have a strange friend you follow on social networks like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, who are a little… difficult. Maybe post too much or what he post doesn’t interest you, so you’d like to stop watching it but without removing it from your friends list or stop following it, taking into account that in some social networks it is possible to know who is following you and who is not.
Facebook, Instagram and Twitter offer options to silence users, allowing you to keep them in your contact list or followed but without their posts appearing on your timeline. So, let’s see how to do it on each of these networks. It’s worth mentioning that the process is the same in iOS and Android apps.
We start with the giant of giants: Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg’s social network offers us three possibilities: eliminate our friends (which we are not interested in right now), block (even less) and stop following. This last one is the one we are looking for.
To access this option, just look for the name of the person at the top and access his profile. Once there you will see the “Friends” and “Follow” buttons marked in blue. Click on the second one, select the option “Unfollow” and then confirm the action by clicking again. Once this is done, the icon will turn gray and your posts and stories will no longer appear on your timeline.
If you just want to mute the stories, simply go to their profile, click on their profile picture and within the story, tap the three dots at the top right and select the “Mute” option.
We go to Mark Zuckerberg’s second network: Instagram. To mute a user on this platform, simply go to their profile and select the options button at the top right of the screen. In the menu that will appear, choose “Mute” (it is marked in red just below “Block” and “Report”).
Instagram will give you three choices: mute stories, mute posts, or mute it completely. Choose the one that suits you best. If you regret it, go back to his profile and click on “Reactivate“, this will unmute him and all his posts and stories will be shown again.
We’re done with the little bird’s social network, Twitter. To mute a user, just access their profile, press the option button (the three dots in the top right corner of the screen) and select “Mute”. When you do, next to the “Follow” button you will see a speaker icon with a red strikethrough. This is the icon to click if you ever want to un-mute it.
It is important to note that responses and mentions of silenced accounts that you continue to follow will still appear in the notification tab. To avoid this, you will have to stop following the account and silence it.
Silenced users will still be able to send you direct messages as they normally do
We can’t finish this little tutorial without stressing that the people you silence will still be able to send you messages as they normally do. This applies to all social networks, i.e. if you stop following a friend on Instagram (for example) they will still be able to send you direct messages, tag you in posts, etc.
