The Mobile World Congress, which has been held without interruption since 1987, has been cancelled this year, 2020, yes, you guessed it, because of the Coronavirus.
After an emergency meeting and weighing up the idea for several days, the GSMA leaders have announced what they expect: there will be no MWC in 2020.
The constant losses by major players such as LG, HMD, Sony, Ericsson or telemarketers like AT&T or Deutsche Telekom to safeguard the safety of employees and attendees, have led to this decision. The Coronavirus has claimed this congress and the event is cancelled.
There will be no Mobile World Congress 2020
One of the last victims of the congress came from Orange, who confirmed to Reuters that it was cancelling its presence at the fair. Similarly, Vodafone confirmed its withdrawal. Adding to the wide list of companies that have decided not to attend the event.
Since the first Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in 2006, the GSMA has called on industry, governments, ministers, policy makers, operators and industry leaders across the broader ecosystem.
With due consideration to the safe and healthy environment in Barcelona and the current host country, the GSMA has cancelled the MWC Barcelona 2020 because global concerns about the coronavirus outbreak, travel concerns and other circumstances make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event.
The Host City Parties respect and understand this decision. The GSMA and the Host City Parties will continue to work in unison and support each other for MWC Barcelona 2021 and future editions. Our sympathies at this time are with those affected in China, and around the world. GSMA.
The GSMA states that the existing concern about coronavirus prevents the congress from taking place, something that has been respected by the organizers in Barcelona. So the Mobile World Congress 2020 is officially canceled, at the expense of knowing what will happen to the rest of the companies that had confirmed their presence at the fair, with big names like Samsung or Huawei.
In the case of Nokia and Sony, the presentations that were planned to be made at the congress will be transmitted by streaming, so we will be able to follow the news from these companies, as far as possible on the same dates as the fair, through their respective YouTube channels.
Similarly, other companies have decided to imitate this move so as not to leave their followers without the possibility of finding out about their latest developments.
From the Wired website they claim that the GSMA would be pressuring the government to declare a health emergency, something that would allow them to cancel the fair by claiming the costs of cancellation. Regarding the issue of income, it should be noted that, according to figures from previous years, the city of Barcelona would lose by the cancellation of the congress, a sum close to 500 million euros.
With all this, the fair does not go more for this year.
