Time for frameless smartphones is approaching

It’s a fact, the time for frameless smartphones is coming and that’s what Vivo, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, knows all about. Vivo is a huge company belonging to the same group as OPPO and OnePlus and perhaps very soon, development partner of the very recognized brand Huawei.

The new Vivo APEX 2020 is a mobile phone that although we will probably never be able to buy it because it is a concept phone, it is very interesting because of the new ideas it raises.

The Vivo APEX 2020 is a spectacular mobile, as it could not be otherwise as it is a concept. It is a smartphone that explores the complete elimination of the side frames thanks to a completely curved screen. Add to this the fact that it incorporates a front camera under the same screen and is nowhere to be seen, and you have a product that is very close to the ideal of a frameless smartphone.

These mobile concepts are unlikely to be offered for sale, but the company has made them. In other words, when a brand presents a concept, it means that it has built it, and even though it does not work very well, the detailed technology has been implemented, although it is not yet known how developed this project is to make it a reality in the near future.

The main feature of the Vivo APEX 2020 is its design, with a 6.45-inch FullHD+ curved screen that bends at an angle of up to 120 degrees on both sides of the phone, virtually eliminating side edges and bezels from the front view. This gives the illusion that what you’re holding in your hand is a screen and not a phone, and in fact, Vivo has decided to eliminate physical buttons such as the power or volume buttons.

This 120-degree “waterfall” display is a step forward in state-of-the-art smartphone technology. It is interesting to see how the BBK Electronics group, manufacturer of the Vivo, takes advantage of each brand to showcase its various innovations, being this Vivo APEX probably the one chosen to show its most recent technological advances.

Inside the Vivo APEX 2020 is a Snapdragon 865 processor, 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. All these, components of last generation that are already accessible in other models.

As for the battery, the bet is quite interesting. Although Vivo does not give data on the number of milliampere-hours of the APEX 2020, it does explain the features of its new 60W FlashCharge wireless charging system, which promises to recharge 2,000 mAh in 20 minutes, which may represent the goodbye to the endless hours of phone recharging

Another new feature of the Vivo APEX 2020 is the inclusion of an “invisible” front camera. This is a front camera hidden under the screen. Through the arrangement of the screen pixels and the circuit design, Vivo explains that they have successfully increased light transmission just above the camera by up to 6 times, thus reducing optical interference, allowing excellent photos to be taken even though the camera lens is not exposed. The sensor used to capture the images is 16 megapixels and uses the ‘Pixel binning’ technique.

For the rear camera, the Vivo APEX 2020 picks up on one of the trends we are seeing this year; that of mobile phones with enhanced zoom. The APEX 2020 incorporates a continuous optical zoom with magnifications between 5x and 7.5x thanks to a combination of 4 groups of lenses. The secondary sensor comes with 48 megapixels and according to Vivo, incorporates a gimbal system to improve its stabilization by 200%. Despite this, it is not yet clear how it differs from other OIS systems that are already built into many high-end mobiles.

In addition, thanks to Qualcomm’s X55 modem, the Vivo Apex 2020 is a mobile phone with 5G connectivity.

The price and availability of the APEX 2020 Live is not known. While they do explain that this mobile concept has been manufactured in black and another in white, it is undoubtedly a most striking smartphone that will be very interesting to have at hand to see how that camera behaves under the screen and to what extent the curved screens with such high angles improve (or not) the experience of the device.

With all this, the only thing certain is that it is companies like Vivo that allow us to anticipate what technology will be in the near future
